Scottish born Kate has been involved
with racehorses since she rode them at Jumbo Wilkinson's yard aged only twelve
years! This experience led to her riding as an amateur jockey both on the Flat
and over hurdles and even one-day eventing... On leaving school she became pupil assistant to the famous Neville Crump where she began to learn the craft of training National Hunt horses. She next rode out for Geoff Lewes at Epsom, until returning to Middleham in the late 80's when she trained a few horses (including three winners) under her own permit. In 1990 Kate became assistant trainer to the then 'up and coming' Micky Hammond at Tupgill Stables and during their very successful four and a half years working together they sent out over two hundred winners in both codes. In 1994 Kate decided to go it on her own and took over Brough Farm, Middleham sending out her first winner in Dockmaster at Newcastle in December '94. Even though that first season '94/'95 was a terrible winter with snow, rain and frost Kate battled on regardless and that determination to succeed has never left her. Her next move in '96 was to Fell View Stables, East Witton where she successfully turned out more winners and numerous placed horses. Her home now, Castle Stables, is right in the heart of Middleham and close to the local Low Moor gallops ~ she moved here in 2001 and has already sent out many winners. Kate's success is due to her belief in not rushing a horse preferring to allow them lots of time to build up to their peak with long steady pieces of work, cantering rather than galloping thereby building up sufficient condition to allow them to retain their form throughout a season. Although Kate suffers from Multiple Sclerosis (MS) she is a very determined lady - her yard is always being upgraded, she continues to battle on and her dreams and ambitions remain solid as ever! She is obsessive about her horses and fastidious in their care which always shows in their condition with a shine on their coats second to none! She is also adept at placing her horses to best effects in the fixtures in her unending pursuit of getting her charges into the winners enclosure whenever and wherever possible! |
